Buddhist MonkWednesday, November 14th: Test Results day!  We were back at UCSF last week to receive and discuss my CT/PET Scan results with Dr. Ko and try to figure out the best course of action from here.

So; what’d we hear?  As suspected; there are still a few small tumors in my Liver.  The largest of which is about 1 inch in diameter, the others are all about 1 centimeter or less in size.  This wasn’t a surprise and does reflect the news post-surgery.  The other thing that’s now clear is (more…)

Floating Down the Mekong River

boat made of flowersThe following is a message from Eric and Maggie.  These two pack a punch when it comes to love and healing energy….this was too good not to share…Enjoy.

Yo Otto!

We’ve been keeping up with the news from our trek around SE Asia. We think and talk about you often and are sending our best thoughts your way.
Here are a few pics…

Picture 1. A Buddhist Monk sending his best vibrations your way

Picture 2.  We were in Luang Prabang, Laos during a festival where they celebrate the end of the rainy season.  Everyone puts a boat made of flowers in the Mekong River, with candles, incense and other offerings to float down the river with their prayers for the year.  We assembled a little one, printed out your picture and send it down the river.  Our prayer was for spontaneous remission.

Picture 3. Launching the boat-shrine on the Mekong
Picture 4. Your boat-shrine floating down the river

Picture 5. Your boat-shrine joining thousands of others

We get back around NYE and hope to see you soon.

Keep up the good fight!

Radiology Day, Thursday, November 9th

Next!I have a question.PET Scan

Radiology Day:  Last Thursday was the day of my first CT/PET Scan.  The morning got off to a slow start; we were informed that UCSF’s Cyclotron was busted and we had to come back in an hour and a half.  It turns out they have the only one in town and they had to go to Palo Alto to score the  fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) they needed for my injection.   UCSF Radiology is down on the waterfront, so Mark and I took a great walk down to the Bay Bridge and found an open gate (naturally!) that lead out under the Bay Bridge to a view of the Bridge and City that neither of us had ever seen…Thanks Mark; it’s really important to have someone positive and supportive along on these hospital adventures; especially when getting tested or receiving results!   Through this whole process,  I’ve never had to go to any of these appointments alone; Give thanks!

The scan it’s self was an uneventful procedure; you get the shot, wait for a while then go lay still on the CT /PET Scan table for about 45 minutes.  The table moves through the scanner several times passing you through the big scanning doughnut made by GE…It’s a good time for a meditation, mantra or great tune to fill your head and focus on the most positive thoughts imaginable.  This time was pretty easy; as soon as the scan started a new song a friend shared with me recently entered my head and brought me a lot of comfort.  He’s been performing that song on his tour recently and dedicating it to me; it might sound crazy, but I could really feel all the positivity generated by the thousands of people he has performed the song for and all of their collective good wishes for my return to complete health…”Hey World”: Give Thanks! Ops~

I now pronounce you Mr & Mrs Pope

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Last weekend: Last Saturday, 10/27/07; 2 weeks after the surgery, was the first day I really started to feel pretty “GOOD”…I’d been doing fine and recovering quickly, but I sure wasn’t back to ‘normal’ (whatever that means?).  Anyway; it was a new beginning for me and it felt great.  I’m getting more and more comfortable physically and have been able to really start to get my head around what might be next.  So, we decided to take our first Road Trip…and it was GREAT!

The Pope Wedding:  Several months ago my friends Gayle and Aaron asked me to officiate their wedding on October 27th.  When I was diagnosed and found out I’d be having my surgery 2 weeks before that I asked them to think about a “Plan B”; I’m glad I did…it took the pressure off of me and gave them the chance to think about who else might be able to hold that space for them.  They asked one of my favorite people on earth; Dae Han….my brother!  As I started to recover and the wedding date got closer, I realized that although I could likely do it myself, Dae was now part of the Ceremony.  So, we all decided that it would be best for Dae and I to “Co-Officiate”.  Wow; what a GREAT idea!  This was the 12th wedding that I have officiated, but the first time I’ve shared that role with a friend…it was magic!  Here’s a short VIDEO of the wedding and reception, check it out…thanks Ziemba~ I’d like to thank both Gayle and Aaron for including me in such an incredible and beautiful day, I’d also like to thank their families and our SF Family’O Friends for all the kind words and soft hugs…it was really nice to have something so positive to focus on for the day.  Give Thanks!

Phoenix and his Healing Garden: Sunday morning after the wedding we left Napa and drove 30 miles north to Middletown to visit a friend of Indra’s.  His name is Phoenix and he is a 10+ year Survivor of advanced Testicular Cancer.  His path has been a unique one and he was willing to open his home and his life to us in order to pass along some of his knowledge and experience and help me with my own healing.  Phoenix endured (more…)
